Establishing a Seat at the Table:An Exploration of Black Femininity Through Neo Soul Music Video Practices

The project explores the profound impact of neo soul music on the reclamation of Black women's identities from Western racial ideologies. Specifically, it focuses on Black American and English women within the neo soul genre and examines how they utilize lyrical content, sound production, and visual aesthetics to seize ownership of their representation. The study provides an in-depth analysis of neo soul as a genre that emerged as a powerful medium through which Black women reconstruct their identities. Central to this exploration is the analysis of neo soul music videos by artists such as Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, where themes of nature play a significant role. The incorporation of natural elements in neo soul becomes a pivotal means through which Black women redefine their identities and femininity in the public sphere.
