This programme of Italian music spans approximately 700 years, beginning with Hans-Martin Linde’s modern reimagining of Amarilli, mia bella—a tribute to the 17th-century virtuoso Jacob van Eyck that blends expressive Renaissance ornamentation with avant-garde recorder techniques. It continues with Dario Castello’s Sonata Prima à Soprano Solo (1629), a hallmark of the early Baroque stile moderno, showcasing dramatic contrasts, technical brilliance, and the experimental spirit of Venetian music through a soprano-range instrument and basso continuo. The journey proceeds to Arcangelo Corelli’s La Follia, a masterful set of variations based on a Renaissance theme of "madness," celebrated for its expressive intensity and enduring influence on later composers. The programme concludes with the lively dance tunes of the medieval jongleurs—melodies passed orally through generations, shaped by travel and improvisation, and marked by their vibrant energy and spontaneity.

5pm Boaz Johnson (piano), with Veronika Dressel (voice) for Mahler 'Lieder'
